Synopsis
Etienne, a young fugitive arrives one stormy night at Montsou, a colliery town in Northern France where he is befriended by a mining family and falls in love with their daughter Catherine.
Moved by the desperate hardship and dangerous working lives of his new colleagues, Etienne plants seeds of hope for a better life. When the mine owners, watched by their shareholders, cut the already pitiful wages the town is ripe for revolt.
